Social security

Danish social security

  • During your employment at Aarhus University, it is a condition of your employment that you are covered by Danish social security for the entire period of employment.

Danish social security includes, for example, access to public healthcare, pension scheme and family benefits. In Denmark, social security is financed through taxation.
For further information, please go to https://medar-bejdere.au.dk/en/administration/hr/recruitment-and-employment/translate-to-english-dansk-social-sikring.

If it is determined that, contrary to our understanding, you are not covered by Danish social security, Aarhus University reserves the right to terminate your employment.

If you plan to work from abroad or take on secondary employment outside Denmark, you must obtain written approval in advance from Head of Department. This requirement is due to the fact that Aarhus University may be obligated to pay social security contributions in another country in such circumstances. Your request for approval must be submitted to Head of Department and to graduate.school.arts@au.dk no later than six weeks before your departure or before commencing secondary employment.

If you perform work or secondary employment abroad without prior approval from Aarhus University, or if you take on secondary employment in a manner that differs from what the university has agreed to, and Aarhus University thereby becomes obligated to pay social security contributions to another country, Aarhus University reserves the right to terminate your employment and to claim compensation for any loss. Aarhus University further reserves the right to make deductions from your salary to offset such losses.

You must also notify Aarhus University if you plan, aside from your ordinary holiday, to stay abroad for an extended period of time during your employment, for example in connection with parental leave. Notification must be sent to your immediate manager and to graduate.school.arts@au.dk no later than six weeks prior to departure.

Please note that Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not covered by the Danish parental leave legislation or the Danish Sickness Benefits Act. It means that we cannot receive reimbursement for your salary during parental leave or sickness.
