The Graduate School at Arts, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with the Independent Research Fund Denmark, invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship in Economic philosophies of education in contemporary public policymaking in Denmark and New Zealand provided the necessary funding is available. This PhD fellowship is available as of 1 April 2026 for a period of up to three years (5+3).
It is expected that candidate awarded the fellowship will be able to commence the PhD degree programme on 1 April 2026.
The PhD fellowship is part of a research project studying how new economic thinking in the ‘beyond GDP’ or ‘wellbeing economy’ movement affects economic philosophies of education in public policymaking. The PhD project must include a comparative study of textual and calculative practices deployed in policymaking, focusing on how the DREAM model in Denmark and the Living Standards Framework in New Zealand affect educational policy during the policymaking phase. The PhD project proposal must outline a methodological framework, including the methods, empirical material, and analytical approaches that will be used. The proposal must also outline the theoretical framing and how it can be used to study textual and calculative practices. Upon request, the project description of the overall project will be shared with applicants (which is recommended).
The candidate should have a Master’s degree in education science, political science, sociology, philosophy, intellectual history, or similar, and have training in document analysis and/or qualitative methods.

The PhD fellow will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Graduate School at Arts, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, with the aim of completing a PhD degree at the Danish School of Education, Aarhus University.
The PhD student will be affiliated with the PhD programme Learning and Education.
The PhD student’s place of work will be the Danish School of Education, Aarhus University. In general, the student is expected to be present at the school on an everyday basis.

5+3 programme
When you apply for a 3-year PhD fellowship (5+3), you must have completed your two year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) no later than 31 March 2026.
The PhD fellow will be employed as a PhD student at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University. The terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (see section 6.1.4), as well as with the protocol to the agreement covering staff with university degrees in the state sector (see enclosure 5).
