Digitalisation of Project Management: Qualitative studies of change (5+3), 2019-7

The Graduate School at Arts, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with IT-vest, invites applications for a fully-funded PhD fellowship in Digitalisation of Project Management. Qualitative studies of change provided the necessary funding is available. This PhD fellowship is available as of 1 September 2019 for a period of up to three years (5+3). The candidate who is awarded the fellowship must commence his/her PhD degree programme on 1 September 2019.

The PhD fellowship will be financed by the 2 parties.

The Center for IT Project Management and Innovation and the Center for STS studies offers a PhD fellowship in the field of project management (PM).

The aim of the position is to research the impact of digitalisation on project management through qualitative methods. Applicants should engage in a project conducting empirical studies on the question how digital tools, processes and methods impact project management (PM). Like many other areas at the moment project management experiences an increasing number of new possibilities based on digital means. This covers a broad range from digital simulation tools to learn project management over different types of project management software (including classical and agile PM tools but also Building Information Modelling tools) up to the use of data analytics to improve for example estimation methods. Currently, there is a growing gap between the growing diffusion of ITon the one hand and the academic research on it on the other. In particular a lack of research on the consequences of digitalisation for and co-constitution of PM in practice. The project should research the different types of PM software and the relations between PM tools and the different approaches to PM. The overall objective of the project is to generate insight into the usage of digital tools, processes and methods and how they change the practices of project managers. The applicants are encouraged to develop and introduce their own project on the digitalisation of PM in the application.

Applicants should be acquainted with qualitative methods and/or ethnographic fieldwork. Knowledge of at least one of the fields of project management, Science-Technology-Studies, critical management studies or a strong qualitative research basis (e.g. ethnography, anthropology, computer-supported cooperative work, or other relevant areas) is required.

The project will be based at the Center for STS Studies as part of the Department for Information Studies and Digital Design, Arts, Aarhus University. The successful applicant will be expected to get involved in the department as well as the center and the field of STS. Further, the project is part of the Center for IT Project Management and Innovation, which is a cooperation between the Center for STS Studies and INEIS, Business and Social Science, Aarhus University, in whose activities the applicant is also expected to take part.
